Funny how alcohol affects us in our lives really.
In most countries in the world, if you touch marijuana then you suffer any of the following:
- Heavy Fine
Yet, alcohol? With the exception of the London Underground, you are practically encouraged to drink it.
In 2008, according to the Office for National Statistics, 13.6 in every 100,000 deaths was as a result of alcohol. That statistic doesn’t sound huge until you think that there are 61 million people in this country today. That means that roughly almost 8,300 people died as a direct result of alcohol.
That stat won’t even include those who get drunk and do something stupid (falling off a bridge, walking in front of a car, etc, etc), yet still alcohol is pushed to the masses as something we should drink.
For as long as I remember, it’s been a corner stone of my life. Days spent drinking in a pub, following by days lost to hangovers. A waist that has bulged due to excessive consumption, yet like so many others, I continue to drink it.
The irony of this case is that what encourages me to cut down, is less the fact that most alcohol tastes horrible, but the fact I want to lose weight.
So out goes the ale, so long lager, despite the alcohol content, it’s hello cider, hello wine, hello spirits.
For me, it’s less the fear of impending doom, but the following calorie count (from those people at drinkaware.co.uk):
- Gin or vodka and tonic =126
- Dark rum and coke =142
- Medium glass of white wine (175ml) =130
- Medium glass of red wine (175ml) =120
- Bottle of wine (white) =555
- Bottle of wine (red) =510
- 5% Lager (pint) =240-50
- Cider (pint) =180-250
- Stout (pint) =210
- Bitter/Ale =180-230
- Liqueur (50ml) =100 -170
- Brandy (50ml) =110
- Whiskey (25ml) =55
- Mixed drink (Ready to drink) (275ml bottle) =160-228
And on that note, I’m going to go have a glass of fortified wine and relax. I’ve got to go for a run tomorrow!
